Position Objectives

Hawkins Memorial Library is looking for an engaged, forward thinking Director with leadership skills and professionalism, excellent community relations, and the ability to take the Library to the next level of excellence in serving the community. The Director reports to the Board of Trustees and works with a dedicated staff. He/She directs all administrative, professional, and technical library activities.

An ideal candidate will be a welcoming person with strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability for effective public engagement and a passion for the importance of libraries in our community.

Educational, Experience, and Certification Requirements:

The educational requirement for Library Director is a high school diploma or a General Educational Development. At least two years of college classwork is preferred, but not required. Director endorsement by the State Library will need to be attained within two years of hire. One year of experience working in a library is highly preferred.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Advisor to the Library Board of Trustees on policy, finances, planning, library performance and laws affecting libraries.
  • Financial – Maintains funding for the library through the city and county budget process. Provides reports to governmental agencies.
  • Personnel – Trains and supervises library department employees.
  • Policies - Implements and interprets Library Board policy to staff and the public.
  • Collection Development – Keeps the library collection up to date by following the Collection Development Policy.
  • Public Relations - Develops and manages Library services and programming, and supervises outreach services in the community through a variety of media.
  • Operations – Organizes and supervises day to day operations of the library. Provides recommendations regarding improvements and acquisitions necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the library.
  • Professional – Participates in County, Regional, and State organizations and trainings as budget allows.
  • Facilities – Maintains and arranges for repairs to the library building. Assists in the planning and coordination of improvement projects, including computer technology and other equipment.

Represents the library in the community by promoting its services and programs. Develops effective and positive working relationships with community leaders, Board of Trustees, Library staff, the La Porte City Council and attends City Council meetings as needed.

This is a full-time position, including some nights and Saturdays.
